There have been two papers published which report on cases of the Delta variant in Asiatic Lions.

  • Karikalan, M. et al (2021) Natural infection of Delta mutant of SARS‐CoV‐2 in Asiatic Lions of India. Transboundary and Emerging Diseases. https://doi.org/10.1111/tbed.14290

This paper reports on SARS-CoV-2 infections with the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) in three captive Asiatic lions at the Lion Safari Park, Uttar Pradesh, India in April 2021. The paper reports clinical signs, laboratory testing and genomic characterization of SARS-CoV-2.

This paper, which has not yet been peer reviewed, reports on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in nine Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) in Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India in May 2021. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis showed that the SARS-CoV-2 viruses belong to a variant of concern (VOC, delta variant, B.1.617.2 lineage).
